Methods for using worker-centered research

Journal Article

This paper explores a novel approach to reducing wasted food and improving food donation by prioritizing and centering the ideas and experiences of frontline grocery retail workers, who were integrally involved in each step of our research process. In this paper, we describe in detail the human-centered design methods used in a worker-centered project in collaboration with a large US grocery retail chain. We provide the context, process, and lessons learned through our partnership with corporate leaders and frontline workers.

This paper examines design’s role in activating convergence within Multiscale Resilient, Equitable, and Circular Innovations with Partnership and Education Synergies for Sustainable Food Systems (RECIPES), a Sustainable Regional Systems Research Network funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
